Grant Awarded to Milford

Farm to School Grant Program    Farm to School Grant Program
Milford students are engaging in farm to school activities such as planning, planting and harvesting produce from edible indoor gardens.

Milford, NH - Through the NH Department of Education, Office of Nutrition Services, a $6K worth of grant money has been awarded to Milford School District to set up two indoor hydroponic gardens that are necessary to the successful implementation of the Farm to School Garden program.

Under the guidance of the district's Food Services Director Mandy Dodier, one unit is being maintained by the 5th Grade Monarch Group at Heron Pond School while the other is being maintained by Ms. Lizzy's students at the Milford High School. Their goal is to use harvested produce in the salads served at all schools. They have started cultivating Romaine lettuce seeds to be planted later this month and are looking forward to having the High School unit to be operational in January.

Farm to School Grant Program helps connect students to the sources of their food. Like classrooms, school gardens are living laboratories that create hands-on teaching opportunities for nutrition and agriculture education. Having indoor hydroponic school gardens in particular offer many advantages for the district such as year-round growing, hands-on learning, resource efficiency, easy setup, and integration with STEM education.
