Academics

The faculty, staff, and administration in the Milford School District hold the core belief that all students can and will learn.  To make this belief a reality for our students, we strive to design and implement effective curricula that challenges all students at an appropriate level and is aligned with assessment practices that guide teachers in planning individualized instruction that engages all learners.  We believe that student learning should be assessed based on mastery of standards over time and after multiple attempts whereby students show what they know and can do.

As the Curriculum Team continues to support these beliefs and implement small, incremental changes to curriculum, instruction, and assessment, we are focused on the following vision and goals for our District and our students:

-Developing systems for flexible learning pathways that will allow students to "move on when ready" and remediate as necessary based on the consistent mastery of content over time.

-Ensuring that all instruction is relevant to each learner and is differentiated based on the needs of each learner.

-Developing effective assessment that is practical, authentic, varied (i.e. - different depending on the purpose), transparent, and closely tied to standards. Assessments should allow students the ability to demonstrate what they know and can do, and skills/knowledge should be assessed multiple times to ensure mastery.

-Utilizing data protocols so that instructional practices can be differentiated based on a student's assessment results.

-Building a culture of learning that is collaborative and hands-on, allowing students to explore a content area through deep inquiry.

-Providing a safe space where failure provides an opportunity to learn and is embraced as a part of the learning process rather than the end of learning.

-Demonstrating through our actions and practices that learning is the end goal, and is a byproduct of good teaching.
